Top Ten Gym Quotes

October 11, 2013

I'm still going to the gym at least three days a week. Haven't lost an ounce but can now lift 50 pound bags of bird seed and cat food without complaint. The best part about my classes is when it is "cool down" time and I know I have survived!

10. Let's do another set.

9. One minute plank.

8. Hips tucked under  and lunge. (Still working on the lunge. It is not easy!)

7. Squeeze those glutes.

6.  Let's do squats. Stick your butt way out (not a problem) and put all your weight on your heels.

5. Low and slow.

4. Lie down on your mat and put your legs in the air. ( My personal favorite)

3. Dead lift.

2. Shoulders back, chest proud. ( I find myself doing that even when I'm NOT at the gym.)

1. And we're DONE!

Exercise is Hell

April 4, 2013

I still go to the gym! Yes, I'm as surprised by that fact as you are. I hate to exercise. It's boring and mindless. But lately I've been finding that it energizes me in unexpected ways. I leave there feeling good about myself. Not only that I dragged myself there but I actually feel physically better.

I really enjoy the classes. Edge Flex, which is weights and a little cardio, pilates and yoga. I'm not really good at anything yet but I really try. However I HATE those show offs!! The women in the spandex (ok, maybe I'm just jealous), and the young girls who seem to exercise effortlessly. Last week I was warming up on the rowing machine. A women sat in front of me to stretch. She looked like a contortionist. All of a sudden she put her head up against the wall. Uh oh, was she having a seizure? A stroke? I looked down at my shirt to make sure I wasn't wearing the one that proclaimed I was a nurse. But no, nothing was wrong with her. She was simply getting ready to STAND ON HER HEAD. WHY??? Did she have to do that right near me? I wanted to go home after that display but I force myself to go to my class.

Class is another story in itself. A room with a wall of windows on one side and glass doors on the other so everyone walking by outside can look in. And always an enthusiastic instructor wearing a microphone. This past Saturday I went to Edge Flex. I've been there several times and was feeling pretty good about my technique. I looked in the mirror and thought to myself, "Wow, that person over there can hardly straighten her legs. Why are her knees bent at such a funny angle?" And if not bad enough she was wearing the same shirt that I was down to the exact color and matching socks. Wait a minute. Is that me? Yes, it was. OMG!! What am I thinking? How embarrassing!

But I'm going back tomorrow. Maybe I'll never be able to wear spandex but I never thought it was that attractive in the first place.

Edge Flex

February 27, 2013

When I got back from Thailand I really got serious about the gym. I met the trainer twice a week and tried to go to pilates and some other classes. But then we had the blizzard and I was stuck at home for four days and then I worked extra one week so was too tired to go to the gym.

But last Saturday Lori and I finally made it to the Edge Flex class. I though it would be, if not a breeze, at least something we could do with no problem. I was wrong. It was a hour of, if not exactly agony, extremely hard work. Brutally hard work.

"Okay let's rest," said the instructor. Five seconds go by and she starts up again. That's a rest? Really? We were tired when it was over but didn't feel all that bad. Energized, we thought. The next morning I went to meet the trainer. I could hardly bend my legs or bear weight on my arms. Lori was no where to be seen. I could hardly walk up the stairs into my house and when I called Lori she was in the same condition. I felt like a cripple. Monday was slightly better. Last night we took a yoga class. Not as intense as the flex class but  still a work out. This morning I can finally bend over to pick something up off the floor without moaning.

Guess I still have a long way to go. Not sure I'll ever get to the fit state I would like. But going to give it the old college try. Besides, when they tell us to go to that peaceful place in pilates or yoga it really does help calm me. But maybe I really enjoy the energy of Edge Flex to keep me in fighting shape!
